Radon gas detection and reduction

Radon and Building Regulations

If your new home is in a radon affected area in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland it’s likely that it will have radon protection built-in.  Similarly, if your new dwelling has recently had an extension added this too should feature radon mitigation systems. The reason being that extensions and new builds are subject to Building Regulations which require protective measures to be taken against radon entering a building.

If in doubt it’s always worth testing for radon but before you do you take a look at some radon maps. Additional information on local ground conditions, geology, hydrogeology and related hazards can also be obtained from the British Geological Survey. The Building Research Establishment also provides guidance on where protective measures may be required in new buildings and extensions, conversions and refurbishments in existing buildings.
