According to the British Government’s Health Protection Agency (HPA) around 90% of deaths from radon occur in dwellings where the presence of gas is below the official ‘Action Level’ of 200 becquerels per cubic metre. This equates to an estimated 1100 deaths per year. As a result The HPA has introduced a new ‘Target Level’ of 100 becquerels. While this is well meaning in that it recognises there is no safe level for radon, it’s a bit scary because at a stroke it increases the number of UK homes ‘at risk’ from around 100,00 to 500,000 or more.
So what should you do? My advice is ‘if in doubt check it out’. You can view radon maps and get advice on testing and reduction schemes from both government and independent companies. You may even be able to get a grant to fix the problem. Contact your local Council, Environmental Health or Housing Department. |
